European festivals remain important because many of them combine exhibitions, book activity, talks, dummy reviews, portfolio meetings, and publisher visibility in one season. For photographers trying to make one trip do several jobs at once, that concentration matters.
Focus on festivals with stable official communication, a known exhibition pathway, or strong review and publishing components. A festival becomes more useful when it gives you both audience visibility and a real professional contact point.
Compare location cost, timing, review access, language context, and the likelihood that your project fits the event’s curatorial direction. Bigger is not always better if your work is not aligned with the programme.
