How To Choose Photo Competitions That Fit Your Work

Not every competition is worth your time. This guide is for photographers who want to apply more selectively and avoid expensive calls that do not fit their work or goals.

Start with the project, not the prize

Choose competitions that actually match your project’s subject, scale, and format. A call with a large prize is less useful if the jury, category, or output style clearly points in another direction.

Check the hidden cost

Compare entry fee, print requirements, translation needs, shipping, and rights language. Some calls are affordable at first glance but expensive once production and follow-up costs are included.
