A festival trip is more useful when you know what you want from it: portfolio feedback, book contacts, curator meetings, research, exhibition context, or a clearer sense of where your work belongs.
Some festivals are best for exhibitions and public programming. Others are stronger for portfolio reviews, publishing networks, book fairs, workshops, or regional research. Before booking travel, write down one primary goal and two secondary goals. This keeps the trip from becoming a vague cultural visit with no follow-up plan.
The value of a festival often appears after you return. Send short follow-up messages, update your edit based on useful feedback, record which contacts were relevant, and note whether the festival is worth returning to next year. Without follow-up, even an inspiring trip can disappear into a folder of photographs and business cards.
When possible, plan around regional clusters rather than a single event. Europe, East Asia, and parts of North America often have nearby festivals, fairs, and review programmes within the same season. A cluster can make travel more worthwhile, but only if the events serve related goals and do not exhaust your budget before the most important meeting.
